Re-released Doom & Doom II no longer require Bethesda.net login

A new patch allows you to skip forced login and another one will "reduce the visibility" of the feature in the future.

The classic Doom, Doom II: Hell on Earth, and Doom 3 re-released at the very end of July on every major platform, to the surprise of everyone. The move was made by Bethesda within the framework of the first QuakeCon Europe and in the so-called "Year of Doom", as the release for the highly-anticipated Doom Eternal approaches.

Another surprise was that the classics required you to log in to Bethesda.net before playing, a surprising requirement for an offline solo experience. It caused rage among certain parts of the community, and the publisher moved quickly to patch this requirement out, with the update available as of yesterday.

We noted the feature at launch, with the PS4 version asking us to login (and to create a new account if needed), to then link that account to the PSN ID, which at the same time caused issues with multi-account consoles. What is more, a notification popped up in-game whenever the user disconnected.

"We've deployed a patch for the re-releases of Doom and Doom II," Bethesda confirmed on Twitter, "which now adds an option to skip the Bethesda net login requirement and removes the disconnect notification during gameplay."

We've effectively downloaded the 1.02 version update for the two games at Gamereactor - a quick fix that now lets you get playing instantly. But there's more, as, according to the publisher, "we are working on a more permanent fix to further reduce the visibility of the optional login. We do not have an estimated release just yet, but we'll let you know as soon as we can."

Apparently, even though there's no online play, the requirement was in place (and will remain as an option) "for the Slayers Club, to reward members for playing the classic Doom games," with Bethesda set to explain these rewards at some point in the future.

How did you feel about the requirement and its quick removal?
