Roccat has not only made a name for itself in the esports space with teams like those in League of Legends, but it has also quickly gained acclaim in the competitive gaming peripheral space too, with the various pieces of hardware they make for gamers to enjoy. Their latest product is called Khan Pro, a mid-range headset for the budget conscious yet quality-seeking gamer, and we've been testing it extensively.

Our first impression as we unbox the headset is that it has a plastic feel to it and an unassuming design with a matte black colour and a silver logo on one cup. They're not outright ugly to look at, but pretty dull in their design, and we would have loved for the logo to have been some other colour to liven things up a little. Another thing that stands out as we put them on for the first time is the fact that they're incredibly light, which would explain the plastic feel of the headset, as weight has obviously been a key concern.

The whole thing weighs a mere 290 grams and this means even the lightest tug on the cord will pull this off your head. We simply forgot that we were wearing them at times and as our stomachs made themselves known for one thing or another we simply didn't think to remove the headset. That's a testament to the comfort they offer, and in spite of the plastic feel Khan Pro has survived numerous run-ins with the floor without as much as a scratch. It's impressive quality in spite of the less than optimal materials.

Another thing that's impressive is the sound quality, which is balanced and pleasant even if the sound doesn't fully blossom as a result of the design. It's something we always nitpick, but for a gaming headset you really need that sort of closed design, partly because it blocks out background noise, and partly because it makes it easier to hear the direction an enemy is approaching from in a game like Call of Duty: WWII. It wouldn't have hurt if the sound would have been a bit bigger as it sometimes it was a bit too understated, which is a shame as the rest of the sound is really good.

The warmth in the midrange is there and the base is tight and well balanced. The treble is clear and full of detail without being overbearing and too sharp either, which is something we appreciate. It's very comfortable when the higher tones sound the way they do when you're playing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and you're caught in intense firefights, just as much as its mellowness is kinder to your ears and it's easier to pinpoint what's going on based on sound alone, something that helps give you an edge in hard-fought games. Simply put, this headset sounds a lot better than it looks, and as far as sound goes it's competitive with the likes of Logitech G633 and Razer Kraken Pro while also in the same price segment.

That leaves the microphone, and we've saved the best for last as it is excellent. Our usual way of testing this is to jump into Teamspeak and ask the players for reaction, and we were met with an overwhelmingly positive response, much more so than when we test headsets usually. We agree with these sentiments, as this is one of the best microphones we've tested and the voice is razor sharp, almost unreal. It doesn't pick up any unnecessary background noise, which is appreciated by parents of young children who sometimes like to sing in front of the television, and additionally, it's easy to mute by simply retracting the mic, which is a brilliant feature we've used a lot.

In spite of a poor first impression, Roccat Khan Pro has impressed us. The plastic feel of the headset is compensated for by great comfort, a clear sound, and an excellent microphone. Given that many of the headsets we test here cost more than twice as much it is easy to recommend Roccat's latest model as it offers great value, although if you're really looking for the best of the best and are willing to spend more, you probably should.
