The original three directors announced to helm the three chapters of the new Star Wars trilogy were J.J. Abrams, Rian Johnson, and Colin Trevorrow, but Trevorrow was fired from the project, and is now replaced by J.J. Abrams working from a completely new script. This isn't the first time a director has been removed from a Star Wars project of course, but it was a pretty big deal, and now we know more details of the firing.

According to a report over on the Wall Street Journal, an anonymous source has said that the filmmaker was ultimately fired due to a lacklustre script. Trevorrow had written the script with Jack Thorne, who was behind Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and this was apparently so little to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy's liking that she chose to remove Trevorrow instead of asking for a rewrite.

Apparently, Trevorrow wasn't satisfied with Thorne either, but at this point it was too late.
