At Gamescom 2016 we talked with the COO of Runic Games Allen Fong to discover more about Hob, the latest game from the developers who brought us fantasy action-RPGs Torchlight and Torchlight II. Hob looks to go in a very different direction from Torchlight, however, and caught our eye immediately.

"We wanted to come out of the gate with this one with something brand new," Fong explained. "Something people wouldn't expect from us. We wanted to go back to games that we love to play and that comes back to games like Journey, Shadow of the Colossus, old Zelda games, Metroid, Castelvania. These all came in as inspirations for us and so we wanted to create a game that was an open world adventure game where you would go around solving puzzles we came up with a hook for it. We thought one of the things we love to do in solving puzzles is change things and moving things around so what happens if we're doing that and fixing the world itself? So we came up with this idea that you go round, you solve puzzles, you move mechanisms around and you can literally raise parts of the world up from the cloud layer and then run around them."

In terms of the story players can expect from Hob, Fong said: "We're actually not doing any kind of interactions with NPCs at all. The entire story itself is told without any dialogue or narration and so your experience with the game is basically you playing and seeing all these hints in the environment and not just understanding how to interact with it but also understanding the story and the world through those interactions."

There's no release date yet for Hob but it will be released on PC and PlayStation 4.
