The Samsung Developer Conference kicked off today in San Francisco, and on the eve of the 5,000+ devs attending the summit we had the chance to talk to Mihai Pohontu, VP of Emerging Platforms at the company. In the complete interview the exec shares his thoughts on many aspects regarding Samsung's multi-platform ecosystem and its future, so we took the opportunity to ask about gaming-dedicated devices.

Firstly, when asked about Samsung potentially entering the console space given its TV, smart devices and VR knowhow, Pohontu says: "I don't think Samsung needs to have its own console. The processing power of our mobile phones will soon arrive at or even surpass the current generation of consoles, so effectively a mobile device is a console".

However, on the other hand, Samsung's VP completely supports recently leaked plans for a PlayStation 4K NEO from Sony, and thus more regular hardware updates for consoles:

"I think it's a great idea", admits Pohontu. "First from an industry angle I would say, anything we can do to maintain some consistency to our platforms and not have to do a complete overhaul every so many years, launching a new generation of consoles, with a new operating system, with a new hardware configuration and just augmenting what we already have, just adapting it to current needs, I think that's a good idea.

"From Samsung's perspective we are just invested in making sure that our mobile devices and our ecosystem devices work seamlessly across platform, they are also as powerful as the market demand is for them and I think we're right there on the cusp of delivering incredible experiences through the mobile device to the rest of the screens in our life."
