We stopped by the Arrowhead Game Studios offices in Stockholm, Sweden for a chat with game designer Patrik Lasota about the upcoming co-operative top down sci-fi shooter Helldivers.

One of the most ambitious things about Helldivers is the idea to have cross-platform play across all three PlayStation platforms (PS3, PS4 and PS Vita).

"It's definitely a challenge. I think we're the first to do it on all three platforms, but we get great support from our engine developer BitSquid. And it's really nice to work with their flexible engine, as they call it, that can handle all three platforms."

"The idea is to have seamless cross-play. If I'm playing on my Vita and I see a friend playing on his PS4 I can just join his game or he can join mine. Or if I'm playing on my PS3 at home and my friend comes over he can just drop into my game from the couch and then we can play with both my PS4 friend and the Vita player."

"Our hope is to have a global meta game where everybody fights together for common goals. And building a community spirit that they help eachother and they're in this war together, fighting in the trenches."

Exactly how this will play out is not nailed down at the moment as there is still ways to go until release:

"Currently we're looking at a couple of options. But we're not really ready to give anything away there yet. I can promise that it's going to be good."

"We're hoping to have some sort of beta testing for the game. We're very early in production still so it's not on the map quite yet, but we're hoping to test it with mass numbers so we can see that everything works before we release it to the public."

REVIEW. Written by Clover Harker

"It's the sort of game that may get easily overlooked as it carries all its strength in the little details."
