In a move that will come as a surprise to many, Sony has closed down Studio Liverpool, the team behind the futuristic racing series, Wipeout.
News of the closure first came in the form of posts on Twitter from employees, the news being described as the "end of an era".
If the reports are true then the studio, formerly called Psygnosis, will no longer be handling development of the Wipeout series. It remains to be seen if this also means an end to that IP.
It was reported by CVG that Sony's Michael Denny visited staff at Sony Liverpool on Wednesday morning to let them know the news. It is also reported that Sony will aim to relocate all staff at the studio.
The closure comes after the lay-offs that followed the release of the recent PS Vita title, Wipeout 2048, and marks a sad end for the genre defining studio.
