Space game Adrift was born from Twitter abuse

Ex-Microsoft creative director on origins of project.

Back in 2013, before Microsoft revealed their Xbox One, and the rumours about a machine requiring a constant Internet connection still lived, Adam Orh stuck his neck out.

At the time he was the creative director for Microsoft's gaming division, and on Twitter he commented that he didn't understand the problems people had with an always-online console. He compared it to not buying household compliances in fear of electrical blackouts with the comment: "Sometimes the electricity goes out. I will not buy a vacuum cleaner".

After receiving several death threats Orth resigned from his position at Microsoft, and went on to make the title Adrift along with his team at developer Three One Zero. According to Orth, the game's a metaphor for all the hatred he endured after the Twitter explosion.

"The destroyed space station is a metaphor for my life at the time," he says. "This isolation is that I felt entirely alone. Instead of talking about it, I just made a game about it."

In Adrift you have to navigate a destroyed space station while trying to use your remaining oxygen (used for breathing as well as the thrusters on your space suit) sensibly, and the game look very promising.
