Streets of Rage is being brought back to life by Lizardcube and Guard Crush and we spoke to the devs at PAX East recently about what's new, the challenges they've faced when making a new game fit into such a classic series and the responsibility taking on the project.
"We're first fans of the original games and what we wanted to do was try to respect the original yet bring it into 2019. What we tried to do is we have this beautiful and interesting game and then gameplay-wise end up with something very similar to the original while bringing something new to the table" said tech director Cyrille Lagarigue and continued,
"We feel the responsibility but at the same time it's a very happy responsibility because people are so happy to at last have a follow-up to these games, to play a new game with the characters they love. It's a real pleasure to have the chance, to be so lucky to work on this game".
When asked about the pressure of changing things up for the classic series, they explained how the art direction was a challenge, "This is a traditional 2D animation game, so the art has evolved, as you can see. and continued to talk about the challenges they faced when deciding on an art style. some people still want pixel art while some want to see 3D. Some people were going to be disappointed either way, so at the end of the day, you have to make your own choices, do your best to hone the original while at the same time bringing what I think is beautiful, traditional 2D animation to the game. One of the bigger challenge is being faithful to the original, since we want to bring something new (to Streets of Rage). If we make something too similar it's not a game that (makes sense) 25 years later. We have to bring modern elements while still keeping the feeling of the original. We're confident we've brought the right amount of change to make it feel fresh but still faithful".
As for how the game will actually evolve, there's plenty of additions coming. "Streets of Rage will evolve graphically, it will evolve with the design, the music. It feels more modern, but it won't evolve too much. You'll have a few different moves that we added to the game, like the star moves, which are powerful ultra moves, bringing something new to the table, also new enemies. You can pick up items, throw them around". You can check out the full interview down below.
