We sat down with Colin McComb of Inxile Entertainment to talk about Torment: Tides of Numenera recently as the game closes in on its final release date.

Torment: Tides of Numenera is an isometric RPG that has been in Steam Early Access for just under a year, and the development team over at Inxile Entertainment are approaching the final stretch of development. The game is a thematic successor to 1999's Planescape: Torment, and has adapted the table-top RPG universe, Numenera.

A couple of weeks back we had a chat with Colin McComb, creative lead at Inxile, who was brimming with passion for the game. The first thing we were curious about was how the team adapted the Numenera universe, merging it with their own Torment Universe. "The team at Monte Cook games is extraordinarily giving, extraordinarily capable, and they have been very generous with giving us free reign to explode their world." McComb told us. "Weve been trying to stay very true to the thematic legacy of Planescape: Torment, so we've been trying to tell a philosophical story set in the Numenera setting."

The team took a lot of inspiration from a number of modern artists and designers and surrealists, and it really shows with the visual style of the game. We asked McComb about who the main inspirations were.
"Definitely Moebius; we also tried to include the works of H.R.Giger. I threw out some Joel Peter Witkin, the photographer, Francis Bacon, and I don't know who else our artists have stolen in there." McComb explained; "Moebius was definitely one of the big ones where we said 'this is a style you guys need to emulate'."

Torment: Tides of Numenera is set to release for PS4, Xbox One, and to come out of Steam Early Access in Q1 of next year, meaning you'll be able to get your hands on the game early next year. You can check out the full interview below.

REVIEW. Written by Bengt Lemne

"It's an RPG that almost borders on a visual novel given its heavy reliance on text and story over combat, grinding and character development."
