The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Zelda's Link is ambidextrous according to Eiji Aonuma

And let's face it, if anyone knows, Aonuma knows.

We were recently lucky enough to sit down with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild producer Eiji Aonuma in Paris, where we put to him a series of questions relating to the latest instalment in the series. During our Q&A we were able to clear up a long-running debate: Link is ambidextrous.

"It is a matter of chance that Link is left-handed in the first episodes, for a reason that we could not really explain today," Aonuma-san replied when we asked for an explanation as to why Link swaps sword arms between games.

"When we developed the game on Wii, we actually had to change and adapt to the majority of players - and that's my case too, I'm right-handed - so we had to make sure that Link was right-handed on that version.

"But it was to adapt to the gameplay, so in the end I think we can say that Link is ambidextrous [laughs]. When the developers at Koei Tecmo, who are in charge of Hyrule Warriors, asked me a few months ago whether he was left-handed or right-handed, I replied that it was absolutely not important to me. Nor for Shigeru Miyamoto for that matter [laughs]."

So there you have it. Nobody at Nintendo really cares either way, but they consider Link ambidextrous, which neatly explains why he's able to mix things up with ease.

Head this way for the full interview with Eiji Aonuma, who discusses all things Zelda-related, from the launch of Breath of the Wild, to its latest DLC, as well as looking back at the Links from the past.
